He then sent me this... !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . This is such a sad list. Please Oppo! GIVE ME REASONS WHY I SHOULD DRIVE A MANUAL!

The car is less likely to be stolen, because people no longer know how to drive them. Also, drivers are likely to pay more attention to driving.

also here's the scenario i always make
"what if your car is at a shop being worked on for a week. Now the shop will give you a rental car free of charge, but one exception its a manual would you rather learn on the rental car and maybe face repair charges on that car too or try and find another rental car or learn to drive stick before something like that happens"

And they are real reasons of why you should get a manual, the "Top 5" for the automatic only talks about convenience and comfort.

Because manual transmissions give you more control.
Because manual transmissions are cheaper than automatics.
Because cars with manuals are less likely to be stolen than autos.
Because you can concentrate on the road better with a stick.
Because people will stop asking if they can borrow your car.

Ugh. That article is basically:
Reasons to drive an automatic:
1) You live in San Fransisco and suck at driving a manual.
2-5) You want your car to be an appliance and like boring while you drive. You also listen to "Soft Rock" stations for enjoyment.
Edit - my primary reasons for a manual:
You are more in tune with your car, you know when something isn't working quite right.
Brakes and tires last longer - prime example, we have a 2008 VW Passat Wagon, bought it new. I taught my wife to drive a stick shift in this car as we bought it as her DD. (She wanted to learn my enthusiasm for it). At 55,000 miles we had to replace the rear brake pads. I looked up how to do it and discovered that most people needed to replace them at 30,000-35,000 miles. We now have 105,000 and are still on the original front pads and much of it is stop and go driving. Quite simply, the car isn't pushing forward while you are braking so the brakes last longer.
You have more control when you can choose the gear you want before you need it, either for speeding up or slowing down.

1. It's easy. If you are unable to drive a manual, you probably shouldn't be driving at all.
2. They cost less, and fiscal responsibility is mature.
3. They force you to pay more attention while driving.
4. They're fun, and they never stop being fun.
5. Hitler drove a manual. If you drive an automatic, you are literally worse than Hitler.

Just tell him that with an automatic you may be encouraged to text and drive. Then show him some gory texting and driving fatality photos. Ask him if he wants that to be you.

As a guy who drives a manual, get an automatic. Traffic sucks in a manual, you can destroy your transmission in a manual, you loathe manual on sick/tired days, and last but not least in an emergency or a broken leg situation who can drive your car?

Your in an emergency situation. You need to get to get to a police station, hospital, etc, you have access to one car, it ends up being a manual. It'd be best if you could drive it.
Also, all those stories about thieves not being able to steal manuals.

1. Free theft protection.
2. dump the clutch, yo.
3. 3 pedals, it's a party!
4. adventageous gear shifter placement. ( for example, my 1987 Isuzu pup that I had in highschool. Single cab, bench seats.. When friends would be in my car, ladies would be strategically placed in the center seat, and was pretty much forced to sit with the gear shifter between her legs. Man, that gear shifter had some LONG throws too, if you know what I mean.)
5. Your fathers MANCARD is officially under review. It's out of my hands at this point.

LOL, no, not at all. He has far more camo than tweed (I don't think he owns any tweed, tbh), puts ice studs on his dirt bike tires and rips wheelies on the frozen pond in between whining about how "they" are gonna take his guns if he keeps living in New York and that the dang police shouldn't keep giving him speeding tickets in the Mustang even though he keeps speeding. Kinda like how hipsters won't call themselves hipsters though.... He also has higher aspirations for his precious, brilliant, eldest daughter's daily driver since she done good and got an education and a real job and isn't still living at home in the trailer like the rest of the kids back home.

You absolutely become a better driver driving a stick. I know me, when I drive my truck or my work van, I tend to zone out. But when I drive the Corvair or the Civic, I'm definitely more focused on what I'm doing. Automatics make people lazy, you can drive and do X at the same time. When you've got a stick, I'm not saying it's impossible to eat or drink something or send a text while stopped at a light, but a manual definitely discourages it.

3. Racecar
4. Burnout
5. Just buy the transmission/car that makes you happy, and leave everyone else alone.

Here are some reasons for you from someone who *only* ever owned manual transmission cars. I've never owned an automatic (though have driven some owned by others).
Usually a bit cheaper to buy
Better real world fuel economy (I have first hand experience with this and have fuel economy data to back it up).
Unless it's a hypercar or drag-racer with insanely high levels of power, you typically get better real world performance with a manual.
If it breaks, it's usually cheaper to fix
Anyone who has enough coordination to walk and chew gum at the same time can probably learn how to drive a manual within a day or two (I speak from personal experience from teaching my ex-wife)
Less likely to get stolen. Many thieves don't know how to drive stick. And some thieves have gotten busted trying to steal cars with manuals simply because they couldn't figure out how to get moving... and by the time they did, the cops arrived.
If you get car jacked, it's much more likely the car jacker will get caught for the same reasons as a thief would
If your battery is dead, you can bump-start a manual car. Can't do that with an automatic.
Less maintenance. Manual cars either don't need to have their fluid changed or changed much less frequently than automatics on average.
You can tow any manual car on 4 wheels without damaging the transmission. Do the same thing on many automatic cars and you'll cause damage. This matters to people who have motorhomes and want to tow along a small vehicle for day-trips.

01/18/2015 at 16:55 | 0 |
I'd also like to add that those 5 reasons to drive an automatic are really REALLY pathetic.
They didn't even touch on one of the BIG reasons to make automatics available in the 1950s... so that men who lost a leg or an arm in WW2 have cars available to them that they can drive.
THAT is a valid reason to have an automatic.
Are there any family members missing an arm or a leg who need to drive your car? No? Well then there isn't any *good* reason why you shouldn't get a manual.
Also, tell your dad that the article was written by a guy named Ryan Looney ... which is ironic... because that's more or less what those "reasons" to get an automatic car... loony.

As a guy who ALSO drives a manual (and has done so in the city for the past 15+ years), I say driving a manual in traffic does NOT suck... provided it isn't an overly powerful car.
Driving a high-powered car with a manual in stop and go traffic is a chore because high powered cars usually have taller gearing... which is great for the open road, but sucks for traffic.
But on a low powered car, the gearing is lower and you can often creep along with the engine idling in first gear and not have to constantly engage/disengage the clutch. It also helps if your car is in a good state of tune. If out of tune or if you have a worn TPS, then you'll have more problems with bucking.

The whole article was utter resentment from someone who either didn't learn to properly drive stick, or is to lazy to do.

My father used to say automatics are for people too stupid to learn.
When I say 'used to', that changed once he got old and converted to the dark side.
He still DDs a manual Renault Espace tho.

That article has me thinking about the khakis and tie I want to be wearing when I hang myself, and which Coldplay song should be playing when they find me, because my life would be so freaking dreary that I just couldn't go on.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm not even close to suicidal and both of my cars are automatics. I drive auto only because transmission style is not paramount when I chose a car. If my 7-seat AWD Mercedes wagon could be had with a stick that's how I would've got it. But if those were my reasons for auto I don't think I could go on.

Lots of good reason here. One more:
If you learn to drive a manual, you can drive home a drunk friend if you rode along with them in their manual transmission car.
